We adopted our dog, Henry, from the local shelter when he was five months old. In his first five months he had been hit by a car, put up for adoption, then adopted and returned three more times. We thought it was just because he had a lot of energy, and that was certainly part of it. He also didn’t know how to walk on a leash. He growled, barked, and lunged at everyone he saw. He barked and whined all day while left at home. He fought our authority constantly. It was not long before we knew we needed help.
To help him get rid of his extra energy, we enrolled in him doggy daycare at a facility close to our house. They threatened us with expulsion after his first day since he spent most of the time barking in the faces of other dogs. At the perfect time, Tecla’s K-9 Academy was recommended to us. I visited the facility one weekday afternoon and was struck by how calm everything was. I mentioned that our puppy was a little bit wild, but was told that Tecla welcomed dogs like that and was happy to work with them. We enrolled in the puppy class and within the first few minutes of the first class, Tecla could tell that we needed extra help. Her exact words were, “This is cockiest puppy I’ve seen in a long time!” She consistently recognized our problems and gave us the special attention we needed, often putting the rest of the class on hold to deal with Henry when he acted out.
Tecla has been wonderful to us and to Henry; I’m sure she is the main reason we were able to keep him. She has seen Henry through puppy class, basic obedience, Rally 1, and now Rally 2. Henry also regularly attends her Pack to Basics and Behavior Modification classes where Tecla’s ability to work with dogs really shines. Tecla has always been there for us–making time for a private lesson when Henry lunged at a woman in the park, calling us on a Sunday when I emailed her in a panic that he was breaking out of his crate and feared separation anxiety, and always providing a welcoming daycare experience where he can have a blast during the day.
The greatest thing Tecla has done for us is to teach us how to communicate with Henry. We have both formed a great relationship with him thanks to Tecla’s classes and guidance, and that relationship has been the key to our success with him. She lets us know what we are doing right, what we are doing wrong, and what else we should be doing.
A year and a half later, Tecla is one of Henry’s favorite people. We are still learning things that we can do to improve Henry’s behavior. He is not a perfect dog but he listens to us, he is calm on walks, mostly friendly around other dogs, and can now make friends with strangers. We have all worked very hard and we completely believe that we would not be where we are today if we hadn’t found Tecla when we did. Thanks!!Katy and Dan
TK9 is the BEST boarding, day care & training academy!!! We boarded our lab “Shadow” over Christmas & the trainers took extra care with her during her stay. She played, learned & came home happy & rested. I HIGHLY recommend Tecla’s K9 Academy to all dog lovers!!!Lee Hyden
Thanks Tecla for coming to A&B. Learned more in an hour one on one with you than I would have in an 8 week session with some other trainers. Em is coming along and Cole has already passed her in carrying items in their mouth. Looking forward to the next time I can get a session with you. For everyone that thought about going and didn’t, you missed out on a great learning experience.Cheryl
Love the staff at TK9. Daycare there is so much more than a safe place to leave your dog. I am always amazed how well they know my dog, how they worked with her when she was fearful, how they helped calm her down during her crazy puppy phase. Training is great too–they’re patient, positive and willing to individualize. It’s a great place!Michele DeMusis
“I love puppy academy and daycare because I feel like I have a support system when i pick up my dog they’ll stop me and say – well, he seemed a little sluggish today or his weight seems a little low.. It helps to know that you’ve got experts on your team that seem as invested in your dog’s development as you are”

I’m so pleased with the folks at Tecla’s K9 Academy. They have worked with me and my new addition, Marsha. Thank you for treating us both with patience, compassion, and respect. I’m looking forward to many more visits and sessions in the future.Steven Sawicki

A little over a year ago, my wife and I decided to get a Belgian Malinois puppy. After doing some extensive research about the breed, we thought he would be a great fit for us. However, what we did not do is read the fine print. Over the course of the first 9-10 months of having him we faced an uphill battle. We tried numerous trainers, classes, and techniques, all of which were not addressing his underlying behavioral problems. We reached a breaking point and decided to do one more comprehensive search to find a trainer who knew this breed specifically. This is when we found Tecla and her K-9 Academy. Looking back now we wish we had found her from the first day we got our puppy. We went through our initial consultation and private lessons with her and then decided it was best to do a 6-week bootcamp to try and correct the behavioral issues. Throughout this whole process we found out that Tecla is all about the health of the dog and she would do whatever it takes to get him better. One example, was her staying hanging at our apartment for 3 hours on a Sunday night, when she probably had better things to do to close out a weekend. We are now about 2 months post bootcamp and are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. We are very fortunate we found Tecla when we did and our only regret is that we did not find her sooner. Her entire staff is terrific and they all have the same passion for dogs. We cannot thank them enough for their help and are confident that we will now have a great dog for many years to come!

We discovered Tecla’s K-9 just over a year ago when we got our new American Pit Bull Terrier puppy, Estela. We needed a place for her to learn socialization skills that was nearby, safe, had a good reputation, and where the staff was knowledgeable and treated the daycare dogs like one of their own. We had the good fortune to find all this at Tecla’s K-9.
Little Estela came to live with us on a Wednesday, and by the next Monday she went for her first day of daycare. Being a nervous “new mother,” I called several times a day for the first few days…my phone calls were always answered cheerfully and I was always reassured that my little girl was doing well. We had always been a two-dog family, so a few months later we added another wonderful and loving Pit Bull to our household, 6-year-old Diamond, and our pack was now complete!
Both our dogs, along with my husband and myself, have taken several classes at Tecla’s K-9, a place they call their second home and whose “aunties and uncles” treat them both like gold. They also get extra learning in via “Academy” training offered during daycare. They are well-behaved and extremely well-socialized to humans and dogs alike, and receive very positive attention everywhere we go. We are so blessed to have Tecla and her wonderful team helping us care for our beloved furry family members–we cannot imagine entrusting “The Girls” to anyone else for daycare. Thank you, Tecla and staff, for everything you do for all of us!Ana and Manuel Vazquez
Tecla and her staff’s sole mission is to transform the lives of dogs as well as the lives of their owners. We are just so thankful and relieved that our pup was able to be under the care of a truly caring and professional team. We would recommend Tecla’s K9 Academy in a heartbeat to anyone who wants their dog to be the best he/she can be! THANK YOU.Karen Chen
Dear Tecla – Today I spent almost an hour in Home Depot with Gabriel for a field trip. People were watching him (I was practicing some commands) and even stopped shopping to just view us. Staff loved him and one chatted with me and wanted to know the name of our trainer. He was composed, paying attention but not anxious. When we first walked in (it has been since the summer that we did a Home Depot field trip), he looked a bit concerned, looked at me and I gave him direction; he was immediately fine. A couple of weeks ago I ran into a neighbor in the mall (not a friend, but neighbor). She was with a friend and they were discussing their dogs. The neighbor said to me: “Whatever you are doing with Gabriel, keep doing it – he is the most behaved dog in the neighborhood.” It got me thinking about how lucky were to have started early with you and that Gabriel knows what matters to us and does routinely often times without our even telling him. We set fair, clear expectations and he automatically conforms. You trained me well to be consistent. JoanneJoanne
Less than 12 hours using a pinch collar and some extra special attention and Nala is almost like a new puppy. We aren’t out of the dog house yet, but I am very confident that we are going to have a transformed puppy! Or at least we’ll have less black-n-blues and broken skin! Thank you for a great session last night, Tecla. Not only did Dan and I find it extremely helpful, but more importantly we can see and feel your passion for what you do. Nala has a great trainer in her corner!Christine G
